Causes of a Dry Mouth
Dry mouth is a common problem among older people. A vast number of medicines, both over the counter and prescribed medications can cause a dry mouth, including antidepressants, antihistamines and diuretics. This is one of the many contributing factors to why so many older adults suffer from dry mouth as they age, as well as the changes in the body’s ability to process medication, inadequate nutrition, and having long-term health problems.
There are many different reasons why a dry mouth can affect people. It could be something as simple as:
- Snoring or sleeping with your mouth open
- Alcohol consumption
- Stress/anxiety
- Dental decay
- Dehydration, not drinking enough water
Burning Mouth Syndrome
Burning Mouth Syndrome is a common condition which is characterised by a burning, tingling or hot sensation of the mouth or localised to the lips and tongue. The feeling might be intermittent or continuous and can have other symptoms such as an unpleasant or altered taste in the mouth, loss of sensation, dryness and can often be accompanied by pain. It is estimated that as much as 15% of the population have burning mouth syndrome and this can be further increased by eating spicy food, talking or stress. It is also more common in women (especially after the menopause) and is often a long-term condition that may take years to disappear.
Burning Mouth Syndrome can occasionally be caused by medical or dental problems such as thrust, reflux and vitamin deficiencies and can worsen if you are stressed or depressed. The mouth may look and even be clinically normal but the symptoms are real and can be very distressing. Using XyliMelts will not only keep the mouth moist and lubricated, they may also reduce the risk of dental caries.
