Bad Breath
Bad breath, medically called halitosis, can result from poor dental health habits and may be a sign of other health problems. It can also be made worse by the types of foods you eat and other unhealthy lifestyle habits. all the food eaten begins to be broken down in your mouth. Also, foods are absorbed into your bloodstream and move to the lungs, affecting the air you exhale.
If you don't brush and floss teeth daily, food particles can remain in your mouth, promoting bacterial growth between teeth, around the gums, and on the tongue. This causes bad breath. Inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) from poor dental hygiene can also cause bad breath.
Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may be a warning sign of gum (periodontal) disease. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on teeth. Bacteria cause toxins to form, which irritate the gums. If gum disease continues untreated, it can damage the gums and jawbone. Other dental causes of bad breath include poorly fitting dental appliances, yeast infections of the mouth, and cavities.
How does eating influence oral health?
Nutrition plays an important role, not only for good health in general, but also in the development and protection of oral and dental health. Ignoring the symptoms of diseases and problems of oral functionality is detrimental to our health. The key to good nutrition is not to avoid some foods but to eat them wisely. It is essential to eat a balanced diet and avoid snacks between meals. A balanced diet consists of eating a wide variety of foods from each of the five main groups:
- Bread and cereals
- Vegetables
- Fruits
- Meat, poultry and fish
- Milk and dairy products
If we bite between meals, it is important to eat foods that do not contain excess free sugars as they are the most harmful to our teeth. Instead, we will choose nutritious foods, such as cheese, nuts, raw vegetables or fruit.
