Corns are caused when the skin on the foot is exposed to repeated friction and pressure. This occurs due to ill-fitting shoes and hosiery. The skin thickens to protect itself from this friction, eventually forming a corn which can be uncomfortable and cause pain when walking. Corns are thick, hardened layers of skin that develop when your skin tries to protect itself against friction and pressure. They most often develop on the feet and toes or hands and fingers. They can be unsightly.
You can develop foot corns from wearing shoes that are too snug on your feet. If you stand or walk for long periods of time, the weight of your body and the constant friction can also cause painful corns on the bottoms of your feet.
